06:14 — Day 12

Twelve days in the canopy and I have yet to photograph a single confirmed specimen. The literature describes Taczanowskia waska as "behaviourally cryptic," which is the entomological equivalent of calling a con artist "socially flexible." This spider does not merely resemble Ophiocordyceps fungal growths — it performs them. The elongated abdomen mimics a fruiting body. The legs splay like hyphae. When disturbed, it sways as if releasing spores. I have been fooled eleven times.

08:30 — Day 12

Attempted macro photography of the growth in Fig. 1 at dawn. As I adjusted focus, the "fungus" shifted. Not in the way that wind moves a dead ant — in the way that something alive decides it has been seen. By the time the shutter clicked, it had repositioned to the edge of my viewfinder. I am beginning to suspect this organism has evolved to detect the geometry of observation itself.

11:45 — Day 12

A colleague at MUSM suggests I am "overthinking a small spider." She has not spent twelve days watching fungi run away. The specimens do not merely avoid the camera — they avoid beingfully framed. Partial observation is tolerated. It is the completion of the gaze they cannot abide. I have started to wonder if the spider has internalised some perverse version of the observer effect: it is the fungus until it is completely seen, at which point it must become the spider, and the spider must flee.

14:22 — Day 12

I have modified my approach. Rather than scrolling smoothly through my observations, I will attempt a rapid "snap" — bringing the specimen into full view and triggering the shutter before the evasion response engages. The literature gives no reaction time for T. waska. Perhaps it is faster than my camera. Perhaps it is faster than my attention. I have allocated the rest of the afternoon to finding out.

16:50 — Day 12

I photographed a genuine Ophiocordyceps fruiting body this afternoon. It did not move. It did not flinch. It simply sat there being dead, which is the one thing the mimic cannot convincingly do. The stillness of actual death has become my diagnostic. If I observe a growth that seems too perfectly still — too committed to the performance — I know it is the spider, holding its breath.

19:10 — Day 12

As sunset approaches, I review my empty memory card. Five specimens. Zero confirmed photographs. Tomorrow I will try a different strategy entirely — perhaps if I stop looking at them directly, they will forget I am here. The mycologist's paradox: the best way to observe a mimic is to convince it you are observing something else.
